My mission statement:
My mission as a first grade teacher is to create a safe learning environment in which all students can learn to their highest potential. All students can learn and can be successful. I foster respect and responsibility in my classroom, all while having fun!
My teaching Philosophy:
Through my experiences, I have developed a belief that children learn better in a stimulating interactive environment. I would like to share a quote with you that I believe sums up my educational philosophy. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and learn.” (Benjamin Franklin)
Classroom Rules
During the first week of school the class brainstormed together the following rules. After we had finished brainstorming each student picked one of the rules to draw a picture to. Those rules along with the student's pictures are posted inside the classroom and will remain their for the duration of the year.

How to Report Bullying
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/6/0/23605858/3246371.png)
Bully is unacceptable. Creating a safe and positive learning environment has always been an ongoing focus of our school. The perception of feeling safe at school is a key factor in student' achievement. Numerous excellent programs and initiatives are in place to promote positive value and decisions and prevent bullying behaviour.
The goals of a Bully-Free School are to:
provide a safe and secure learning and work environment
ensure a welcoming environment
communicate openly and pro-actively with the public
strive to provide equitable services, programs and facilities
support diversity through anti-racism and equity education
encourage co-operation, acceptance and respect in the school community
provide opportunities for students to exercise personal responsibility and civic duty
promote critical and creative thinking to prepare students to face challenges and changes.
Students are encouraged to speak to their teacher, vice-principal or principal whenever they feel threatened or unsafe. Students and parents may also report bullying using the Report Bullying Now button on the school's website.
We thank everyone in our school community for working together to stop bullying now.

Our School's Green Initiative
![Picture](/uploads/2/3/6/0/23605858/4267061.gif)
I have a strong passion towards the environment and would like to share that with my grade one students. This year I will be starting a "live green" initiative in our classroom.
Already established at our school is a boomerang lunch program, which means all garbage from lunches and snacks will be sent home. I ask that you try to adhere to the program as best as possible. Please try and pack lunches and snacks in reusable containers. Also, please ensure that all containers have your child's name printed clearly on them.
Throughout the year we will be studying the environment according with The Ontario Curriculum Science and Technology document. Here are a few of the topics we will be exploring: the importance of reusing and recycling, smart energy use (how to use energy wisely), living things and their needs, how to treat all living things with care and respect, assess the impact on people and the environment, and how seasonal
changes affect living things.
We will be supporting our learning through a variety of field trips. This year the grade ones will be visiting the Ontario Science Center, Toronto Botanical Gardens, along with a trip to an apple orchard in the beginning of October (more details to come).
At the end of the year we will be teaming up with two Grade 3 classes and participating in creating a school vegetable/fruit garden. The produce we receive from the garden will be donated to a local food bank. Participating in this experience is a great learning opportunity for students. Your child will get the opportunity to take part in: deciding what crops to grow, planting, taking care of them, observing how they grow and harvesting them to send to a local food bank.
To assist us through our green garden school initiative, we will be working with two organizations Community Harvest Ontario and Green Up!
Community Harvest Ontario
Community Harvest Ontario is a new program of the Ontario Association of Food Banks organization. Community Harvest Ontario builds partnerships with farmers and corporate partners to grow, glean, and donate local fruits and vegetables. They serve to help feed Ontarians who are forced to turn to food banks each month.

Green Up
Green up has been around for more than twenty years and is one of Ontario’s leading organizations. Green up focuses on environmental issues. It partners up with individuals and schools to offer different programs and services. The main focus of their program is to provide tools that make small changes in homes and schools that will create a larger impact on the environment. Green up offers programs such as "Greening my school,” where they visit schools and try to make them more environmentally friendly. They also offer school programs where they go around to different schools with different workshops and activities to better educate the children on the environment.
