During the first week of school I will be reading the story, Have You Filled A Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud.
Why I read this book my students: This book encourages positive behaviour as children see how very easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love on a daily basis. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves.
Activity: Bucket filling
The purpose of this activity is to encourage kindness and positive behaviour towards one another in the classroom.
Students are read the story, Have You Filled A Bucket Today? After reading the book, as a class we will brainstorm ideas on chart paper on ways we can be bucket fillers or bucket dippers. Afterwards the chart will be displayed in the classroom as a daily reminder for students. Each student is then given a small bucket that can be put on the corner of their desk. The students will be allowed time to decorate their own bucket. Pre-made“tickets” will be available to give to the students to fill out. Students will be encouraged to fill out “tickets” to put in other student’s buckets. This is done throughout the day. At the end of each week, I will ask the students to bring their buckets to circle, where they can each open their buckets and read their tickets independently.
I have attached a youtube video of a reading of the book for your personal enjoyment.
Update: I have attached a picture of the list we brainstormed together in class. We will be starting to fill our buckets on Monday.
