Throughout the year I will be trying a variety of motivational strategies in the classroom. Some of the strategies listed below will be new, while others will be ones that have been proven successful with motivating students in the past.
1. Students will be taught the importance of setting goals. Students will be asked to make personal goals and learning goals. Students will aim to make their goals realistic, achievable and small to start.
2. Individual Rewards will be given for students who have showed progress toward their goals to encourage and motivate to complete them.
3. Positive Feedback. To let students know they are on the right track.
4. Students are taught to use the power of positive thinking and believe in themselves.
5. Inspire them! Inspirational quotes and reminders are posted around the classroom as visual reminders to motivate students
6. Stickers are given out on a daily basis for doing good work. I find students in the past like the stickers and will work super hard to earn one.
7. Class incentives. Each week students will have the opportunity to earn an extra recess. This extra 15 minutes may include going outside in the warmer months or going to the gym. A win-win situation, students get to burn off some steam and exercise.
8. Educational Games. I like to try my best to incorporate fun games and activities to go along with the lessons we are learning. Students have so much fun participating they don’t even realize their learning.
9. Special recognition certificates. Certificates will be a new strategy I will try this year. Certificates will be handed out as a way to honor students for special work. In addition, I also like to read out examples of good work while students are working.
10. Having fun and engaging lesson plans. By incorporating multiple intelligences and different styles of learning into each of my lesson plans, this will help engage students who might otherwise struggle to pay attention in class.
